At 96, Rose Vana is the oldest resident of Arthur McCants Manor. She has been living at this complex for 26 years.
Residents of a 115 unit affordable senior housing complex received energy saving weatherization upgrades and other benefits from a free program. Crews installed energy efficient products and weatherization improvements. December 3rd, 2007 was the first day that work started at Arthur McCants Manor.
The whole complex is receiving about $200,000 of free services. The residents received free items and free installation of things like: high efficiency light bulbs, shower heads and faucet aerators; pipe, attic, and wall insulation; window and door caulking; weather stripping; programmable thermostats; air conditioner tune-ups and more.

An opening celebration event occurred at the complex on December 3rd. The Las Vegas HUD office, Field Policy and Management and Multifamily staff, partnered with Nevada Power to insure the residents at Arthur McCants Manor received this new free service. It is called the Comfort Savings, Home Weatherization Program.
The event and activity was in support of HUD’s Energy Savings Program. In October 2007 Bernie Yergeau of the HUD Las Vegas Field Office contacted Wayen Waite, HUD’s Regional Energy Representative, to see if and energy efficiency project could be accomplished with Nevada Power. Mr. Waite then asked Larry Ackley with Nevada Power to discuss possibilities with Mr. Yergeau about getting this project done in Las Vegas for energy savings.
Last year Nevada Power and Sierra Pacific sponsored two successful lightning change-outs for public housing properties in Las Vegas and Reno as part of the 2006 Change A Light Campaign.
This year, HUD’s Las Vegas Office identified the 100 unit affordable senior housing complex, Arthur McCants Manor. Nevada Power again joined HUD and HUD property owners and managers in facilitating lighting replacements in this low-income housing development.
